Children who have disabilities have specific rights under state and federal laws when it comes to suspensions and school discipline. This workshop will provide an overview of these rights and the process used for discipline and suspensions. With the beginning of Spring we thought it would be fun to incorporate rainbows in our food in April.  FRN will lead participants through a Rainbow Pasta Salad recipe and we will supply the ingredients! SUMMARY:Autism Conference: Keeping Children and Adolescents with Autism Safe in an Increasingly Complex World
DESCRIPTION:Keeping Children and Adolescents with Autism Safe in an Increasingly Complex World\nFriday\, April 29\n9:00 am – 12:00 p.m.\nOnline\nREGISTRATION REQUIRED \nREGISTER HERE \nSafety awareness and safety skills are critical to teach for all children\, including autistic children. This presentation will provide an overview of what is understood about safety risks in different situations and developmental periods for children and adolescents as well as what is known to be helpful and effective at maintaining safety in those situations. Specifically\, we will review safety at home\, in the community\, and at school\, including abuse identification and prevention. We will discuss elopement/wandering\, a common concern of families of autistic children as well as considerations for increasing awareness and support by law enforcement and other emergency responders. This 3-hour long presentation will largely consist of case studies\, interactive activities\, and discussion of both general and specific strategies. \nTopics Covered: \n\nSafety risk factors and preventative strategies\nConsiderations for involving community and school in increasing safety\nAbuse awareness and recognition\nLaw enforcement and emergency responders\nElopement/wandering\n\nJennifer Gillis Mattson\, PhD is a Professor of Psychology and clinical psychologist at Binghamton University. She is the director of the Binghamton Regional Center for ASD\, Institute for Child Development and the BU Education and Autism Research Project. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of autism\, spanning from early childhood through young adulthood. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Family Resource Network Teen Scene and Dragon Dates Programs for our upcoming event \nTransplanting and Beginning our Gardens Outdoors \nThursday\, June 9th\n5:00pm-6:30pm\nOnline via Zoom  \nJoin FRN for Part 3 of our virtual gardening series! It is now time to transition our plants to the outdoors. Some of you may be using raised beds/buckets/pots while others may choose to transplant your plants directly into the ground. We will go over both\, as well as talk about some other plants you may want to start directly from seeds now! Leading up to this event you will want to acclimate your baby plants to the outdoor environment. Each day for about a week prior to this event (weather permitting…don’t put them out if its overly windy\, raining really hard) place your plants outdoors in natural sunlight for several hours. More detailed instructions will be provided on this process during our May 9th Transplanting Event. \n*If you did not participate in Part 1 or 2 or your baby plants didn’t grow as expected\, that’s ok!
