This opportunity is funded through a grant from the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities\, so priority will be given to the families of individuals with OPWDD eligibility. \n5:00-6:00 pm: Dinner and conversation in the Field House Atrium\n6:30-8:30 pm: “An Evening with Temple Grandin”\n8:30-9:00 pm: Dessert with Family Resource Network in the Atrium \nRegistration is required. \nRegister Here or call Robin at (607)432-0001 to register by phone. \nTemple Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and she has been a pioneer in improving the handling and welfare of farm animals. \nShe was born in Boston\, Massachusetts. Temple’s achievements are remarkable because she was an autistic child. At age two she had no speech and all the signs of severe autism. Many hours of speech therapy\, and intensive teaching enabled Temple to learn speech. As a teenager\, life was hard with constant teasing. Mentoring by her high school science teacher and her aunt on her ranch in Arizona motivated Temple to study and pursue a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer. \nDr. Temple Grandin obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1974 she was employed as Livestock Editor for the Arizona Farmer Ranchman and also worked for Corral Industries on equipment design. In 1975 she earned her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University for her work on the behavior of cattle in different squeeze chutes. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University. \n***This opportunity is funded through a grant from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Learn how to read the NYS Regulations and understand what is included in the IEP and how it is individualized to meet the unique needs of a student. \nEffective Communication \nDo you come away from meetings not saying what you intended or feeling misunderstood? Do you understand what the team members are saying? Do you respond effectively? Communication is key to productive partnerships. Learn to recognize the barriers in communication and stregthen your advocacy skills by learning effective and collaborative strategies. \nCommunicating Through Letter Writing \nLetters are an important record of concerns. Problems can often be avoided through letter documentation. Each letter differs according to the situation\, the person to whom you are writing\, and the issues you are discussing. Consuelo has trained and developed curricula for a wide range of topics of importance to the disability field (Autism\, Complex Needs\, Aging\, Multiple Disabilities\, Dementia/Alzheimer\, Social-Sexual Issues\, Vocational\, Dual Diagnosis\, Mental Illness and Profound Disabilities). In addition\, also\, Professional Development\, Cultural & Immigration Issues\, Diversity and Inclusion\, Leadership\, and Emotional Intelligence. \nConsuelo has been providing social-sexuality education for 17 years to professionals\, families\, people with disabilities and professionals in the field. Ms. Senior practices both group and individual psychotherapy (13 years) with groups\, families and individuals ranging in age from 6 to 65+ years\, with and without cognitive disabilities. Ms. Senior currently practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, Play Therapy\, Schema Therapy & sex therapy. Ms. Senior’s mission is to help others to live their best life. Consuelo is an adjunct lecturer at City College of New York (Disability and Social Work courses) and Adelphi University (Social Work-Graduate Courses). Consuelo has presented at numerous conferences across the country and internationally\, for a variety of audiences. She has also presented at symposiums\, radio programs and panel discussions as an expert mental health clinician. Consuelo is an agency representative to the U.N’s Economic and Social Council and is published in The Autism Spectrum News. Nancy is also the Director of Statewide Training and presents at local\, regional and national conferences on Family Peer Support Service outcomes. \nElijah Fagan-Solis is the Statewide Emerging Leadership Manager for Youth Power! At age 14\, Elijah was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Failure and labeled disabled. Despite the label placed on him\, Elijah was determined not to let a disability control his life or future. Today\, Elijah has worked with the NYS Assembly\, is a member of two national honor societies and has received awards for involvement in his community and for his belief in the ability of people to change\, grow and make a contribution to the world. He is also highly active in his\nchurch where he serves as a Deacon\, the administrative assistant and heads the youth ministry program. \nZack Kilmer is the NYISA Coordinator for Youth Power! Zack is a LGBTQ+ young adult with autism who has had a passion for activism and civics since he was a child.
