Conference: Puberty and Sexuality: What Parents Need to Know

Talking with your child about sexuality can be challenging, especially when you are the parent of an individual with disabilities. Consuelo Senior will talk to families about:

  • What is Sexuality?
  • Proactive techniques to support sexuality through the developmental lifespan.
  • Sexual rights as human rights.
  • Parents as the first social sexual educator.
  • Help your child to “let love in and keep abuse out”
  • What messages is your child getting? Where are they learning about sex, sexuality and all things sexy? How does this influence their actions?
  • Harmful effects of the repression of sexual expression.
  • Dispelling myths about sexuality and disability.
  • Building disability pride= positive self-image.
  • What does my child need to know?
  • Where can I get help?!
  • Good touch/bad touch, private vs. public

About our Presenter:
Consuelo Senior, LMSW
Mental Health Clinician, Transformational Speaker, Consultant, Staff Trainer, Educator, Sexuality Expert.

Consuelo has 21 years of experience working in the field of mental health and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Consuelo brings a myriad of experience from a variety of areas within the field; psychotherapist and consultant, staff trainer, case manager, quality assurance, administrator, direct support professional, educator and transformational speaker. Consuelo has trained and developed curricula for a wide range of topics of importance to the disability field (Autism, Complex Needs, Aging, Multiple Disabilities, Dementia/Alzheimer, Social-Sexual Issues, Vocational, Dual Diagnosis, Mental Illness and Profound Disabilities). In addition, also, Professional Development, Cultural & Immigration Issues, Diversity and Inclusion, Leadership, and Emotional Intelligence.

Consuelo has been providing social-sexuality education for 17 years to professionals, families, people with disabilities and professionals in the field. Ms. Senior practices both group and individual psychotherapy (13 years) with groups, families and individuals ranging in age from 6 to 65+ years, with and without cognitive disabilities. Ms. Senior currently practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy, Schema Therapy & sex therapy. Ms. Senior’s mission is to help others to live their best life. Consuelo is an adjunct lecturer at City College of New York (Disability and Social Work courses) and Adelphi University (Social Work-Graduate Courses). Consuelo has presented at numerous conferences across the country and internationally, for a variety of audiences. She has also presented at symposiums, radio programs and panel discussions as an expert mental health clinician. Consuelo is an agency representative to the U.N’s Economic and Social Council and is published in The Autism Spectrum News. She also has been cited in the NYU Review of Law & Social Change and other publications.
