The following topics will be covered:
Understanding the Special Education System using the regulations of the NYS Commissioner of Education Part 200-201
Learn about the legal requirements set forth in the NYS Regualtions of the Commissioner of Education Part 200-201, and how to use the regulations to be an equal partner in your child’s education. Learn how to read the NYS Regulations and understand what is included in the IEP and how it is individualized to meet the unique needs of a student.
Effective Communication
Do you come away from meetings not saying what you intended or feeling misunderstood? Do you understand what the team members are saying? Do you respond effectively? Communication is key to productive partnerships. Learn to recognize the barriers in communication and stregthen your advocacy skills by learning effective and collaborative strategies.
Communicating Through Letter Writing
Letters are an important record of concerns. Problems can often be avoided through letter documentation. Each letter differs according to the situation, the person to whom you are writing, and the issues you are discussing. This training will help you learn to effectively write letters to the professionals involved in your child’s special education.

Kara Georgi is the Parent Education Specialist for Starbridge parent training and information center. Seh offers support and information for families and professionals navigating the special education system in Cayuga, Tompkins, Onondaga, Cortland, Broome, Madison, Chenango, Otsego and Delaware Counties.
